This year, 170 exhibitors, 150 stands, and over a thousand book signings, along with panel discussions, book presentations, and concerts, will be part of the 95th Annual Book Week from June 13 to 16 at Vörösmarty and Vigadó squares in Budapest and on the Danube embankment.
The event will commence on June 13 with linguist, poet, and literary translator Ádám Nádasdy, following a march by the Fire Brigade Orchestra into Vörösmarty Square. This will be followed by toasts and the Beautiful Hungarian Book 2023 (Szép Magyar Könyv) award ceremony, as announced by Katalin Gál, President of the Association of Hungarian Publishers and Book Distributors (MKKE), at a press conference.
Ms. Gál expressed delight at the large number of exhibitors and noted that publishers are preparing big promotions and numerous new books for the celebration.
Hundreds of new books will be published for Book Week, including about 90 poetry books, and the number of fiction, children’s, and youth literature books is also increasing annually. “It is not true that people do not read, that young people do not read,” she asserted.
Gál emphasized the MKKE’s mission to promote the idea that “reading is not an option for the chosen few” but is accessible to everyone. She stressed the importance of parents reading stories to children who are not yet of reading age.
Emese Révész, chair of the jury for the Beautiful Hungarian Book 2023 competition, noted that while the status of books, publishers, and reader needs have evolved significantly over the past 70 years, the aesthetic value of books remains crucial.
She remarked that a well-designed book is a collective effort involving designers, graphic artists, typographers, illustrators, printers, and publishers.
The winners of the competition for the best Hungarian books were selected by a five-member expert jury. This year, 63 publishers and cultural institutions entered 105 volumes in eight categories.
Winners included Walking Books (Sétáló könyvek) from Athenaeum Publishing in the book series category, Silk Light (Selyemfény) by BOOKART Publishing in the fiction category, and The Tram (A Villamos) by Pagony Publishing in the children’s and youth category. Other notable winners were Albert Kner – Artist, Icon, Legend (Kner Albert – Művész, ikon, legenda) by Corvina Publishing for non-fiction, and Wild Animals Anatomical Drawings by MMA Publishing in the specialist book category. Special prizes were awarded to various publications, reflecting the high standard of Hungarian book design and publishing.
