Belgian Minister Calls for Excluding Hungary from EU Decision-making Processes

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.06.03.

Brussels wants to suppress the pro-peace forces and remove the last obstacle to war by silencing and excluding Hungary from decision-making processes, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Budapest on Monday.

The Minister was referring to a recent statement by his Belgian counterpart that the Article 7 rule of law procedure against Hungary should be moved forward, thereby depriving Hungary of its voting rights in the Council of the European Union. Hadja Lahbib, Foreign Minister of Belgium currently holding the EU presidency, told Politico in an interview that Hungary’s repeated vetoes should lead to the Article 7 procedure being extended, which could result in Hungary being deprived of its voting rights. “I think we need to have the courage to make decisions: go right to the end of Article 7, activate Article 7 right to the end, which provides for the end of the right of veto,” the Belgian politician added.

In response, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said that those who may have doubted the importance of this week’s European Parliament elections could now be convinced that such an important decision may not have been made before the Hungarian people, as Brussels is in a state of war-madness and pro-peace activists are being silenced. Brussels is now trying to remove the last obstacle to war. “Six days to go until the European elections, six days to go before people pull the emergency brake on the pro-war train, which is now hurtling towards its final destination, a third world war, in a seemingly unstoppable way,” he warned.

On June 9, the people of Europe can pull the emergency brake, but it is clear that in the few days that remain, Brussels will continue to do everything it can to silence those who speak for peace and against war,”

he said.

Péter Szijjártó stressed that his Belgian colleague has now taken such a step, and is trying to silence the voices of peace. “The Belgian Foreign Minister is taking the initiative to exclude Hungary from EU decision-making processes, so that Hungarians cannot represent our position, cannot express their opinion on the consequences of our joint decisions, and are not allowed to say that they do not want to go to war.

So that we Hungarians are not allowed to say what kind of war madness is going on in Europe today, and so that we Hungarians are not allowed to say that the threat of a third world war is getting closer,”

he added.

“We need very strong support and a big victory on June 9 to be able to resist the pressure in the coming weeks and months, to be able to speak out strongly for peace and to stand up against the preparations for a third world war here in Europe,” he stressed. The Minister noted that this was clearly not to the liking of the liberal mainstream in Brussels, but that the government would not give in to pressure and would soon take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union, and would do its utmost for peace in that position.
