Secretary of State Defends Viktor Orbán against Belgian PM’s Criticism of Press Freedom

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.05.30.

Questions are not filtered in advance at Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s press conferences, stated Zoltán Kovács, Secretary of State for International Communication and Relations, on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

Responding to a comment by the Belgian Prime Minister, Mr. Kovács accused Alexander De Croo of slandering Hungary and exhibiting “Orbanophobia.”

He added that, “we are not surprised by this latest slander.”

The Secretary of State criticized De Croo’s understanding of the facts, suggesting that the Belgian Prime Minister had never seen one of his counterpart’s lengthy press conferences, during which questions are not filtered.

Zoltán Kovács advised De Croo to focus less on “cheap jabs” at his fellow EU Prime Minister and more on his own re-election campaign for the forthcoming EP elections.

Mr. Kovács also suggested it might be time for De Croo to reconsider his pro-war stance.

According to an article published on Wednesday in the Flemish-language Belgian daily De Knack, De Croo stated in response to a question from a newspaper staff member that his party would never cooperate with the Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) party because “they do not want to throw Flanders into chaos.”

He noted that around five thousand companies had left Catalonia due to nationalist movements. De Croo emphasized his belief in democracy, adding that if he were an “Orbán-type head of government,” his spokesman would filter questions and only allow favorable ones. “Fortunately, we don’t live in such a country,” he concluded.
