Viktor Orbán: National Sovereignty “Shot in the back” by the European Commission

Hungary Today 2024.05.27.

The European Court of Justice’s decision that Hungary must pay six million forints a day to Brussels for refusing to accept migrants is not simply outrageous, but shocking, Viktor Orbán told Kossuth Radio. The Prime Minister asked: how can anyone tell Hungarians who they should let in? He said that while Hungary was protecting Europe and had already spent billions of euros on border protection, Brussels was shooting them in the back, reported hirado.hu.

Serbia has received almost 7,000 illegal immigrants so far this year. Most of them have entered the country via the Bulgarian or northern Macedonian borders. The migrants are now making fewer attempts to cross the Hungarian border, which is closely guarded by the authorities. But the EU institutions do not appreciate the government’s efforts.

In 2020, the European Court of Justice ruled that Hungary’s asylum system violated EU law on several points, and a year later the European Commission referred Hungary to the court for failing to comply with the ruling. The minister responsible for the Prime Minister’s office, Gergely Gulyás, said at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting that the court’s new ruling has been issued, although it will only be announced four days after the EP elections. According to the ruling, Hungary will have to pay a daily sum of six million forints to the committee.

It is the practice of the commission that Hungary, which has always played an exemplary role in the protection of its external border, and we stressed the importance of protecting its external border in 2015, is now under attack,”

the Minister said. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said on Friday on Kossuth Radio that Hungary is being fined while protecting Europe and spending billions of euros on border protection.

Since Hungary is not willing to accept migrants, we have to pay six million forints a day to Brussels. That in itself is bloodcurdling, so it is not just outrageous, it is bloodcurdling how anyone can come up with the idea of telling Hungarians who should be allowed in.

“I cannot imagine any actor in world politics who would have the right to say to Hungarians: dear Hungarians, it is not you who tell us who can enter your country’s territory, but we will tell you. This is impossible,” the Prime Minister stressed.

On Saturday, Orbán also posted a video on his social media page. “While we are defending Europe, while we are building fences at a cost of hundreds of millions of euros, they are shooting us in the back. So it is not just migrants we have to fight, but they are shooting Hungary in the back from Brussels, and they do not give us a single penny for protecting them, but they take six million forints a day out of our pockets because we do not let migrants into Hungary. The whole situation is nonsense as it is, and the only answer is to disrupt the European leaders who make such decisions.”

In April, the European Parliament voted in favor of the migration pact, which the government says continues to facilitate illegal migration. And a recent Századvég survey shows that the majority of European citizens also reject the pact. According to the results, 60% of the EU population is against the resettlement of illegal migrants without the say of Member States. Only 27 percent are in favor of the measure.

And a cross-country comparison shows that Hungary has the highest proportion of those who oppose the Pact, with 85% of the population opposed to the resettlement of migrants. The Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Slovakia have almost the same level of opposition to the pact.
