Almost two hundred young singers, including 18 Hungarians, have entered the 6th Éva Marton International Singing Competition at the Liszt Academy.
The competition, which has a total prize money of EUR 70,000, attracted 106 female and 90 male singers from thirty-two countries around the world. Singers could enter the competition with a video recording of an aria, oratorio, or cantata piece from the Baroque and other periods of their choice.
The largest number of entries, 44, came from Korea, 30 from China, 18 from Russia, 18 from Hungary, and 10 from Ukraine, as well as from the United States, Germany, Kazakhstan, Croatia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and Thailand.
A pre-selection panel chaired by Éva Marton will decide in the coming weeks who will go through to the live rounds, which will take place between September 1 and 8. The results will be published in early June on the martoncompetition.hu website and the contestants will be notified by e-mail.

The international jury of the competition is chaired by Éva Marton, who is also a co-founder of the Friends of Hungary Foundation (MOBA), publisher of news portals, Hungary Today and Ungarn Heute.
The prestigious panel includes Hungarian and foreign opera stars: Miguel Lerín, one of Spain’s most influential artistic managers; Peter Mario Katona, casting director of the Royal Opera House in London; Anatoli Goussev, a Ukrainian-born tenor and singer living and working in Italy; Christina Scheppelmann, German music manager, former artistic director of the Liceu Opera House in Barcelona and currently general director of the Seattle Opera; Italian tenor Vittorio Terranova; Dmitry Vdovin, Director of the Bolshoi Theater’s Young Artist opera program; mezzo-soprano Andrea Meláth, Head of the Department of Vocal and Opera Studies at the Liszt Academy; and Szilveszter Ókovács, Director-General of the Hungarian State Opera.
