Hungary is committed to agricultural digitalization, promoting stability and predictability in food production. By using innovation and digitalization, we can reduce the risk of production while increasing efficiency and competitiveness, said Minister of Agriculture István Nagy at the 34th FAO Regional Conference for Europe on Wednesday.

The biennial conference is the main forum of the World Food Programme (WFP), bringing together European agriculture ministers and other senior government representatives to discuss current agricultural and food issues.

In his speech, the Minister stressed that it

is essential that agriculture and food systems adapt to new challenges.

The negative consequences of extreme weather conditions can be prevented by improving irrigation. The Hungarian legislation favors irrigation from surface water, thus reducing the excessive use of groundwater resources, the Ministry of Agriculture quoted István Nagy as saying.

The Hungarian government has developed natural water conservation measures to adapt land use and crops to local environmental conditions.

It also places particular emphasis on improving soil quality, as good soil condition improves the drought tolerance of farmland.

The politician also drew attention to the importance of food systems. He stressed the need to reduce food waste at all levels of the food supply chain. “During the Hungarian EU Presidency in the second half of 2024, Hungary will also give priority to this issue, as we will organize an international conference in autumn 2024, together with the FAO regional office. An important objective is to promote cooperation between EU and non-EU countries and to present good practices,” the Minister concluded.

Fact

As Hungary Today wrote earlier, the government’s competitiveness strategy sets out strong commitments and ambitious plans to boost the food industry. About the strengthening of technology and digitalization, the government has identified three main points:

  1. Encourage investments focusing on technological efficiency through targeted state aid and/or agricultural support system.
  2. State incentives for software development to strengthen the digitalization background of the Hungarian food industry.
  3. State support for agricultural robotization and automation.
