President Tamás Sulyok was received at the Magistral Palace by Grand Master Fra’ John Dunlap on April 26, reports Magyar Kurír. During the meeting, the Hungarian Head of State praised the work of the Order of Malta in over 120 countries worldwide, particularly in Hungary, where the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta stands as the largest social institution, aiding an average of 13,000 people daily.
“The Hungarian Association of the Knights of Malta has been active in your country since 1928, and I am proud to say that the range of humanitarian activities carried out by the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta is impressive today. I take this opportunity to express the deepest gratitude of the Order for the generous support that the Hungarian authorities continue to provide to the Association and to the Charity,” conveyed the Grand Master to the President.
Diplomatic ties, renewed in 1990, have revived long-standing relations, which have flourished over the years.
This is evident through numerous official visits, the signing of postal and cooperation agreements, and extensive and successful collaboration in the humanitarian field.
Notably, the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta has been actively supporting refugees in Ukraine, assisting over 52,000 individuals to date.
“Let me stress that the understanding and excellent cooperation between Hungary and the Order of Malta are deeply rooted. The Order is a reliable partner, particularly in serving those in need, and has consistently remained faithful to its mission,” said Sulyok.
Since 1996, there have been three Grand Master and two Presidential visits between the Order of Malta and Hungary.
Just two weeks ago, the Secretary of State for the aid of Persecuted Christians, Azbej Tristan, paid his second visit to the Order and was received by the Grand Chancellor. This meeting served as an opportunity to reaffirm shared Christian values, express mutual concern about the escalating number of armed conflicts, and underscore the necessity for multilateral diplomatic action.
