Ilaria Salis, an alleged ANTIFA activist currently under arrest in Hungary, and aspiring candidate for the European Parliament elections representing the Italian far left, spoke out on Thursday in admiration of the partisan struggle against Nazi fascism, coinciding with Italy’s national holiday commemorating the end of World War II.
Her words, conveyed by her father during a march organized by the National Association of Italian Partisans (ANPI) in Rome, resonated with participants who fervently chanted “Ilaria be free!“. The letter, penned while still in Hungarian custody, was directed to the Italian press.
In my homeland, we honor the end of World War II and the expulsion of Nazi fascists, a testament to the valorous efforts of partisan men and women. From my confines, I earnestly hope that my nation upholds its storied legacy. May it continue to confront global injustices and remain steadfast on the right side of history. Happy 25th of April!”,
Ms. Salis wrote, as April 25 holds significant importance in Italy, marking the liberation from fascism during World War II.
Salis, a 40-year-old, anti-fascist activist, was apprehended by Hungarian authorities in February of 2023. Her trial, which commenced earlier this year, centers around accusations that include committing assault on innocent people in Budapest.
On April 18 , the Greens and Left Alliance (AVS) announced their nomination of Ms. Salis as the lead candidate for one of the party’s regional constituencies in Italy for the upcoming European Parliament elections. Reflecting on the nomination, her father, Roberto Salis, commented that discussions were ongoing regarding the intricacies of the nomination process, given Ilaria’s unique circumstances among European candidates.
Ilaria epitomizes the spirit of anti-fascism today,” asserted Mr. Salis.
However, Enikő Győri, a Fidesz MEP and former ambassador to Rome, countered these sentiments, stating that Salis would not be the first MEP to face criminal allegations. Ms. Győri accused the Italian left of exploiting the legal proceedings for political gains, particularly to assail Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
We maintain a clear separation between politics and justice, as evident in the stance of the Italian government,” Győri remarked.
In conclusion, Ilaria Salis’s plight and her advocacy for anti-fascism have become focal points, sparking debate and drawing attention to the intersection of law, politics, and justice.
