The Italian government acknowledges the Hungarian government’s authority and the independence of its judiciary. Enikő Győri, Fidesz MEP, emphasized in Strasbourg that the case of Ilaria Salis, an alleged ANTIFA activist arrested in Budapest, will be adjudicated by an independent court, ensuring fairness.
Speaking to Hungarian journalists alongside Roberto Salis, Ilaria’s father, and French Green Party MEP Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, Ms. Győri pointed out that the true motive behind the ongoing controversy is to discredit the Italian government led by Giorgia Meloni.
Italian media pressure their government to intervene, alleging unfair treatment of Salis in Hungary.
Despite this, Enikő Győri reaffirmed Italy’s respect for Hungary’s governance and judiciary independence, crucial for upholding the rule of law.
Ilaria Salis and her accomplices sought out a neo-Nazi demonstration in Hungary (allegedly to disrupt it), but which are prohibited by law. Ms. Győri criticized attempts by the Greens and Left Alliance (AVS) to exploit Salis’ potential parliamentary immunity for political gain.
She emphasized that the decision lies with Italian voters, urging them to see beyond political agendas manipulating Salis’s trial.
Delbos-Corfield echoed concerns about Salis facing potentially biased trials in Hungary, highlighting Hungary’s departure from democratic principles.
Roberto Salis criticized Hungary’s failure to adhere to rule of law standards, especially regarding the treatment of EU citizens like his daughter. He suggested the possibility of appealing to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
Ilaria Salis is not running as a candidate for the European Parliament for the left and the European greens in order to “escape” the process, but to “have a fair trial and enjoy her rights,” added Roberto Salis.
