Government to Give a HUF 15 Billion Boost to the Tourism Sector

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.04.24.

A support program has been launched to boost tourism sector competitiveness, announced the Minister for National Economy, Márton Nagy. The HUF 15B (EUR 38.1M) package aims to enhance service quality and rural economy through targeted initiatives.

The program’s elements include supporting rural catering businesses with HUF 13B (EUR 33M), modernizing Tourinform offices, and preserving gypsy music in cafes with HUF 1B (EUR 2.5M) each. Minister Nagy stressed tourism’s strategic importance and its role in economic growth.

Despite last year’s full recovery post-pandemic, a sustained increase in overnight stays is expected this year, with 2023 surpassing 2019 figures. The SZÉP card (a voucher system provided by employers that can be used for tourism, dining, or free-time activities) continues to drive domestic tourism. This year, 42.8 million overnight stays are forecasted, a 2% increase from 2023, and 3% from 2019.

By 2030, the sector could contribute 16% to GDP and record 50 million guest nights annually.

Zoltán Guller, Hungarian Tourism Agency’s chairman, anticipates another record year, noting a 15% increase in visitors and 13% rise in overnight stays from January to mid-April. The first tender will aid 13,000 rural catering businesses, while the second supports modernizing Tourinform offices, and the third aids around 500 musicians.

The launch of these programs is imminent, with a streamlined application process to ensure swift disbursement of funds.
