Ferencváros (FTC) mathematically secured the 2023/24 OTP Bank Liga (top flight of Hungarian football league system) title with a 0-0 draw against Kisvárda FC in the 29th round. The 35-time Hungarian champions reached the top of the podium for the sixth time in a row (2019-2024), setting a new club record in the process, M4Sport reports.
From the very first minute, Ferencváros, who were fighting for the title, played with enormous superiority. The title defenders were unable to break down the well-organized Kisvárda defense throughout the match, but secured another championship title with the goalless draw. After the game, the fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the players.
Ferencváros had the longest run of five consecutive league titles between 1908 and 1913 – led by seven-time top scorer Imre Schlosser – which was repeated by the team last year.
With the current title, the club has an unprecedented run of success to celebrate.
Next season, Ferencváros can try to catch up with Újpest FC, who were Hungarian champions seven times in a row between 1969 and 1975. The absolute record is held by MTK (Magyar Testgyakorlók Köre Budapest Futball Club) with ten consecutive titles (1916-1925), in which the legendary English head coach Jimmy Hogan played a major role.
The current Ferencváros squad includes two players who were part of the FTC squad in all six seasons that ended with titles: Dénes Dibusz and Endre Botka.
Another noteworthy player is Dávid Sigér, who was also part of all six titles, but signed for Fehérvár FC in January.
Both Dénes Dibusz and Endre Botka are seven-time champions. The former won his first title with Fradi in the 2015/2016 season, while the latter won the trophy a year later with Honvéd (Budapest Honvéd Football Club), after which he signed with Ferencváros.
