Viktor Orbán: There is No Freedom in Europe without Hungary

Hungary Today 2024.04.19.

Magyar Nemzet reports that on the morning program of Kossuth Radio, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán highlighted the growing global concern over the dangerous state of the world. He particularly emphasized the escalating tensions in Israel, cautioning that it could potentially escalate into a broader conflict involving states. He also noted the absence of peace in the Balkans.

Emphasizing the importance of strategic calmness, Mr. Orbán stressed the need to manage the Israeli-Palestinian conflict effectively to prevent loss of life and economic disruption. Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, he advocated for an urgent ceasefire and peace talks, expressing concern over NATO’s involvement potentially exacerbating the situation.

The Prime Minister reiterated Hungary’s stance of non-interference in foreign wars and NATO’s role as a defensive alliance.

Viktor Orbán asserted that Hungary’s government is committed to promoting peace in Europe, contrasting it with what he perceives as a pro-war sentiment among European leaders. He expressed hope for a shift towards peace-oriented policies, emphasizing the need to minimize financial support to Ukraine amid worsening economic conditions and increasing migration challenges.

Switching to another topic, Mr. Orbán criticized the state of freedom of expression in Western Europe, highlighting instances of censorship and repression in media, academics, and politics.

He contrasted this with Hungary’s commitment to diverse viewpoints and freedom of speech.

On the issue of migration, the Prime Minister rejected the idea of managing it and instead advocated for sovereignty in determining immigration policies. He emphasized the importance of protecting Hungary’s borders and preserving its cultural identity.

Addressing agricultural concerns, Mr. Orbán linked recent farmer protests to the war in Ukraine and the resulting influx of cheap Ukrainian grain.

He underscored the need to safeguard Hungarian farmers’ livelihoods and market interests.

In a broader context, Orbán stressed the urgency of prioritizing peace over war, asserting that current EU leadership has failed to effectively address crucial issues. He positioned Hungary as a pro-peace advocate and called for a similar stance across Europe, framing it as a pivotal issue in the upcoming elections.
