For the first time, a Terra Hungaricorum wine tasting will take place on Saturday, April 20, from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Petőfi Literary Museum. The aim of the tasting is to become a regular showcase and highlight event for Hungarikum varieties, Magyar Nemzet reports.
The organizers of the event, the Terra Hungaricorum Foundation and its partner organizations, consider it of utmost importance to cultivate Hungarian wine traditions and to promote the varieties considered to be Hungarikums, the organizers write. The aim of the wine tasting is to become a regular showcase and highlight event for Hungarikum varieties, with a special focus on old Hungarian varieties that are still grown on small areas.
As the organizers say, three important winemakers should be mentioned in connection with the ancient Hungarian varieties of the Carpathian Basin. József Szentesi has played an important role in the revival of many extinct old Hungarian varieties, and grapes such as Csóka, Tihanyi kék, and Laska have become successful again. The specialist, who works in Pázmánd and Nadap (both in central Hungary), was elected by the wine industry as the Winemaker of the Winemakers in 2013.
László Andrási is doing similarly important work on varietal conservation in Somló. Oszkár Maurer, a winemaker in the South of Hungary, is not only outstanding for his mission to replant special old varieties in the South of Hungary/Szerem region, but also for having been the founder of several initiatives in the wine sector (e.g. Terra Hungarica, Carpathian Basin Winemakers’ Association). This year he is a candidate for the Winemaker of the Winemakers Award.
The Terra Hungaricorum Wine University’s free tastings will focus on old Carpathian Basin grape and wine varieties and recent Hungarian breeding:
