China Southern Airlines is launching a flight between Budapest and Guangzhou, which will mean seventeen flights a week between Hungary and China, making Hungary the absolute leader in the Central European region, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on Thursday.
The Minister said that following preliminary negotiations, China Southern Airlines, one of the world’s largest airlines, will launch a new flight between Guangzhou and Budapest.
The first aircraft is expected to take off on June 27, with four flights a week between Guangzhou and Budapest,”
he emphasized.
Péter Szijjártó pointed out that Guangzhou is a metropolis of some 15 million people and the capital of Guangdong Province, known as the factory capital of the eastern world, where companies such as BYD, the world’s largest electric car manufacturer, Huawei, one of the world’s largest IT companies, and ZTE, Sunwoda, and Eve Energy, which are also present in Hungary, have their headquarters and large factories.
“With such an extraordinary economic development and a population of 127 million people, we are now establishing direct air links. This province accounts for 10 percent of China’s GDP,” he highlighted.

Szijjártó stressed that the development of economic relations between Hungary and China is an important pillar for the future growth of the economy. “Therefore, this announcement represents another resource, another milestone in this cooperation,” he noted.
“Moreover, there is another significance of the launch of this flight,
as from now on there will be seventeen flights a week between Budapest and major Chinese cities, which will make us the absolute leader in Central Europe,”
he added.
The Minister concluded by saying that like investment, there is a fierce competition between the countries and capitals of the region for such flights, hence it is a great success that China Southern Airlines has chosen Budapest. “This is another big boost for economic cooperation between the two countries,” he emphasized.

In addition, as Hungary Today previously reported, China is providing visa-free travel for Hungarian citizens between March 14 and November 30 this year. Furthermore, in a spirit of reciprocity, the Hungarian authorities will grant long-term visas on first application to senior executives of major Chinese companies investing in Hungary. These decisions will further strengthen economic and tourism cooperation between Hungary and China, as well as people-to-people contacts.
