The construction of the new Mercedes plant in Kecskemét (central Hungary) is proceeding in accordance with the original schedule, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced on Monday on his social media page.
Péter Szijjártó wrote in his Facebook post that with the investment of around HUF 400 billion (EUR 1 billion), Mercedes will double its production capacity in Kecskemét, which will Hungary to play an even more prominent role in shaping the modern automotive industry.
The new Mercedes plant will be ready to start series production by the end of next year, which will make a major contribution to boosting the performance and exports of the Hungarian economy, he said. He added that
a new chassis production plant and a new assembly plant will also be set up, creating new jobs.
The Minister stressed that the attractiveness of Kecskemét will continue to grow and Hungary will also improve its position in the world economy.
Szijjártó also noted that Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management responsible for the production and supply chain, reaffirmed that Mercedes is counting on Kecskemét as a key location for its global operations in the long term. He also spoke highly of the operating conditions in Hungary and the skilled Hungarian workforce, the Minister added.
Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary Kft. started operations in Kecskemét in 2012. In the reporting period 2022, the company produced more than 150,000 vehicles and employed 4,543 people. In 2022, the company generated sales of nearly EUR 4 billion, compared to EUR 3.1 billion in the previous year, with more than 99 percent of its revenue coming from export sales. Its profit before tax increased from nearly EUR 75 million in 2021, to more than EUR 96 million in 2022.
