Polish-Hungarian History Competition Draws 1,500 Students in Poland

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.04.08.

Almost 1,500 students in Poland are preparing to participate in the first round of the third year of the national competition on Polish-Hungarian historical relations.

Organized by the Waclaw Felczak Institute for Polish-Hungarian Cooperation in Warsaw, the event is titled “Poland-Hungary – the story of a friendship.” The competition will unfold in 170 secondary schools across Poland, under the honorary patronage of Hungarian Ambassador to Warsaw, Orsolya Zsuzsanna Kovács. A total of 1,435 students from various regions of the country have eagerly signed up to compete.

The winners of the competition will be granted scholarships, with amounts ranging from PLN 600 to 4,000 (EUR 140-935).

In a noteworthy gesture, Orsolya Zsuzsanna Kovács and Tomasz Zieliński, a member of the lower house of the Sejm from the Law and Justice (PiS) party, and vice-president of the Polish-Hungarian Friendship Section of the parliament, have announced on social media that they will jointly donate special prizes each of PLN 1000 (EUR 233) to the students who make it to the final of the competition. This initiative is in celebration of Day of Hungarian-Polish Friendship on March 23.

This year’s competition will delve into Polish-Hungarian relations in the 20th century,

with a focus on pivotal events such as the Polish-Soviet War of 1920, and the aftermath of the German and Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939. Questions will also encompass the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, alongside Polish actions during that period.

Last year’s competition spotlighted three emblematic figures of shared history: St. Kinga, Polish King István Báthory, Prince of Transylvania, and Józef Bem, a Polish general involved in the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–1849. The inaugural year of the competition, 2022, explored the relations between the two nations during the 14th and 15th centuries.

The final round of the competition is slated for April 29, with the results set to be announced at a grand gala event in Warsaw on May 17.
