Krisztián Forró, the president of the Hungarian Alliance, announced his support for Peter Pellegrini, the current president of the Slovak Parliament and presidential candidate of the second strongest party in the three-party Slovak government coalition, Hlas-SD.
In the first round of the presidential election, former foreign minister Ivan Korcok won with 42.5 percent of the votes cast, advancing to the second round with Peter Pellegrini, who received 37 percent. As we previously reported,
Krisztián Forró secured fourth place in the first round with 2.9 percent, below the rate he expected.
After the results were published, Forró announced that he and his party will support one of the candidates in the second round. The first name Mr. Forró mentioned was Peter Pellegrini.
Yesterday, during the joint press conference, Forró expressed his belief that given the current circumstances, Pellegrini would be the best choice for Slovakia and for all those who care about regions, national communities, and peace, alluding to the fact that his rival, Mr. Korcok, is strongly in support of solving the conflict in Ukraine via military means, rather than through peace negotiations.
Presidential candidate Pellegrini echoed Forró’s thoughts, highlighting his shared positions with the Hungarian party leader on various issues, such as the war in Ukraine and the need for addressing regional disparities. He emphasized his aspiration to unify citizens regardless of their nationality and to ensure that the Hungarian community will feel fully integrated into Slovak society.
The second round of the presidential elections in Slovakia is scheduled for April 6th.
According to relevant legislation, the second round no longer requires at least half of all eligible voters’ votes in favor, but a majority of the votes cast by the participating electorate.
