This year, there will be plenty of activities organized in the Balaton region on the occasion of Easter: more than fifty events will be held, with a number of creative and unique activities for the holiday season.
Compared to an average spring weekend, Easter means a five to six-fold increase in turnover for some accommodation establishments. “In addition to relaxing, tourists can also take part in exciting and interesting activities at Lake Balaton. A good example is Siófok, where tourists are welcomed with a 15-meter-long sandwich,” said Tamás Fekete, vice-president of the Balaton Tourism Association, to Turizmus.com.
Besides cultural festivals and church commemorations, more and more sporting events promoting a healthy lifestyle are also being organized during this period, promoted as part of a campaign called Open Balaton. The biggest sporting event will be organized on the southern shore, where thousands of children and parents are expected to attend at Easter: the Siófok festival, Húsvéti Nyuladalom, will take place between March 29 and April 1. There will be a rabbit derby, a magic show, egg tree decorating, dance school performances, folk games, and of course, lots of exhibitors.
But the biggest attraction is the Sunday run, which has been organized every year since 2016. Éva Molnár, president of the Balatuning Association, explained that the so-called egg and rabbit race is an amateur race for families, and the shorter distance for children can be done on scooters, roller skates, or bicycles.
By the end of the race, the world’s biggest Easter egg sandwich will be created in the Main Square: it will be made of 80 cm loaves of bread and will run along ten beer benches, which means it will be about 15 meters long. Once the runners have finished, the finish line will be transformed into an egg-eating and peeling contest and an egg king will be chosen.
Those wanting to chase the bunny around Lake Balaton by bike can visit the BalatonBike 365 stations in Keszthely, Balatonföldvár, or Balatonfüred, where bikes of all sizes can be rented. At Easter, the bike egg hunt starts from Balatonfüred. The route is easy to follow with children, so those who want to win Easter presents at the end of the game have to take a photo of five Easter egg signs, said Péter Éskovács, staff of the Open Balaton campaign.
