Csemadok (the largest cultural organization of Hungarians in Slovakia) held a commemoration ceremony in Podunajské Biskupice (Pozsonypüspöki, part of the Slovak capital, Bratislava) on the occasion of the 176th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848.
The occasion was attended by Dr. Katalin Szili, the Prime Minister’s Chief Advisor and former Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, ma7 news portal reports.
In Podunajské Biskupice, people traditionally gather at the grave of former Polish freedom fighter and soldier, József Kutsera, to pay tribute to the heroes of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848-49 and the achievements of their struggle.
In a statement sent to MTI, Dr. Szili said that the events of 1848 show that there are historical situations when it is necessary to stand up for the rights of the nation.
“March 15, 1848 is still a valuable example and a day of great value for the Hungarian nation, when a new period in our history began.” The feudal socio-economic system was replaced by a modern structure based on civil foundations. March 15 is also the birthday of the civic conception of the state,” she stressed in her statement. She also added that “…the Polish legions that fought there already expressed at that time the Polish-Hungarian friendship, what is still alive today and uniting the two nations.” The official commemoration day of the Polish-Hungarian friendship is March 23.
