Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians Affirms Role in Serbian Coalition Talks

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.02.28.

In Belgrade on Tuesday, Bálint Pásztor, President of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ), reiterated the party’s longstanding aspiration to continue its participation in the Serbian government coalition.

This is a tradition being upheld over the past decade. The announcement came following a meeting between the VMSZ delegation and President Aleksandar Vucic. Throughout this week, President Vucic will engage in discussions with parties and party alliances that secured parliamentary representation in the early elections held on December 17th.

Subsequently, he will extend an invitation to the most probable party candidate to form the cabinet.

The VMSZ is set to hold six seats in the 250-member parliament for the forthcoming term. Mr. Pásztor has previously emphasized that his party will not pursue ministerial positions in the government at this time but intends to maintain its role at the level of state secretary.

During the meeting, there were no discussions regarding future positions. Instead, President Vucic and the VMSZ delegation deliberated on the party’s plans crucial for the Hungarian community in Vojvodina. Pásztor underscored discussions on Serbia’s development, particularly in areas inhabited by Hungarians.

Key agenda items for the VMSZ are infrastructural enhancement in Vojvodina settlements, combating illegal migration, European integration, economic development, and improving demographic indicators.

Mr. Pásztor expressed optimism about the swift signing of a coalition agreement between the Hungarian Association of Vojvodina and the Serbian Progressive Party. He anticipates that the adjourned parliament session from February 6th will reconvene in a few weeks, during which the Speaker, deputies, committee members, and delegations will be elected.
