Representatives of 180 companies from Hungary and abroad were keen to find out how and what kind of contracts they could win in the current stages of the construction of the two new nuclear units at Paks, in southern Hungary.
Rosatom held a briefing for potential suppliers of the Paks II nuclear power plant project in preparation for the construction of two new units, reports Világgazdaság.
More than 350 representatives from 180 companies from Hungary and other EU countries, as well as from Russia, Turkey, and Serbia, attended the event. Vitaly Polyanin, ASE (Atomstroyexport, Rosatom’s engineering department) Vice President, and Paks II construction project director, noted that the high number of participants at the meeting was an indication of the huge interest in the project which entered the construction phase last year and is on track. He explained that
preparations are underway for the first concrete casting, expected to take place this year.

ASE is doing its utmost to maximize the use of local suppliers and to involve as many interested companies as possible in the project.
During the event, interested parties were informed about the possibilities and conditions of participation in the project, the requirements for suppliers, including nuclear certification. Representatives from ASE’s Hungarian branch also discussed contracting and site work, and answered questions.
Gergely Jákli, CEO of Paks II, also spoke about how strengthening the security of supply in Hungary and implementing the European Green Deal are inconceivable without expanding domestic nuclear capacity. He stressed that a significant market will open up for companies involved in the project, as many countries in Europe and around the world have decided to extend the lifetime of their existing units or to build new nuclear power plants.
Aleksandr Merten, ASE Vice President for International Development, stressed that Rosatom is open to the participation of companies from different countries in individual projects and is increasing its presence in the global nuclear energy market. In addition, the website of ASE’s Hungarian subsidiary will be launched shortly to inform interested parties about the Paks II project and supply opportunities.
The Paks II project is based on the Russian-Hungarian intergovernmental agreement signed on January 14, 2014. The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued the construction license for the new nuclear power plant in August 2022. The nuclear power plant will be equipped with 3+ generation VVER-1200 units.
It is the first Russian project in the European Union.
Obtaining the construction license is confirmation that the project meets Hungarian and European safety standards. Four VVER-1200 units are already in operation in Russia and two similar units are operating outside Russia at the Astravets Nuclear Power Plant in Belarus.
