For the first time, TUI Hungary organized a professional event in Debrecen, where the development plans and summer timetable of Debrecen Airport were presented, Turizmus.com reports.
It was 22 years since international commercial traffic started at Debrecen International Airport, with 2019 being the peak year. At that time, 14 scheduled flights were operating alongside numerous charters, with more than 600,000 passengers a year. Following a complete shutdown during the COVID pandemic, traffic is gradually recovering, with more than 300,000 passengers forecast by the end of this year. From April, six scheduled flights will operate from the airport to London, Eindhoven, Larnaca, Munich, Rome, and Istanbul, with a possible resumption of flights to Tel Aviv.
During the summer season, eight charter flights will also operate to Burgas, Corfu, Crete (Chania and Heraklion), Zakynthos, Hurghada, Antalya, and Monastir in Tunisia.
The airport will have two separate floors for handling passengers traveling within and outside the Schengen area. To improve passenger service, a number of investments have been made recently to install self-check-in points and modern security scanners. A children’s play area is also planned to be opened by summer.
Plans for a complex development of the airport have been drawn up, including the construction of a new runway, a passenger terminal, and a general aviation building, as well as upgrading the landing system, as part of the “Debrecen 2030” program.
The long-term goal is to have two to three million passengers using the airport every year.
The Hungarian State, which acquired a 51% stake in Debrecen International Airport Kft. in 2022, would play a major role in financing the investments.
Tamás Király, Managing Director of Debrecen Airport, also pointed out that 2.5 million people live in the airport’s catchment area and that according to the Financial Times, Debrecen is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe today. He said that more than EUR 10 billion of capital will be coming to Debrecen in the near future, and that the airport will be developed in parallel with the increase in purchasing power. An incentive program has been developed to attract new airlines.
