The General Directorate of Water Management has started the first phase of the new dam system to protect Esztergom (northwest Hungary). During the course of the project, one and a half kilometers of flood protection system will be built on the Prímás Island.

In the more urbanized areas of the island, along the Danube Promenade, parapet walls and mobile flood protection walls will protect the city from flood waves. In the more natural areas, structural flood protection embankments will be built.

The government has earmarked HUF 13.8B (EUR 35.5M) for the first phase of the works, between the Marie Valerie bridge and the ramp on Prímás Island.

To compensate for the necessary felling of trees in the area, 1.1 hectares of new forest will be planted, 11 hectares of habitat will be restored, and three hectares will be used to control invasive plant species.

In September 2023, another contract was signed for the design of the second phase of the development, aiming to connect the new protection line to the existing flood protection embankment and to protect the Primate’s Palace and Elisabeth Park. The second phase will also include the construction of the Primate’s Palace seepage system and several urban development elements. The works will be carried out on the basis of a consortium between the municipality of Esztergom and the North Transdanubian Water Directorate, under the overseeing of the General Directorate.

The flood protection structures currently in place were built in the 1910s, and last improved in the 1960s. Since then, there have been several episodes of rising flood waters. The current protection line no longer meets the height requirements for the safe discharge of major floods, and no further embankment development is possible on the original track.
