Under the Science and Innovation, Technology, Industry and Logistics Park Council’s (Council) decision on Tuesday, three new rural industrial parks can be established in addition to the 18 logistics parks title, and four additional industrial parks can carry out land expansion, announced the Ministry for National Economy.

The government, supporting investments in the logistics sector, created the legal framework for logistics parks in 2023. The aim of the new certification system is to create a unified regulatory, certification, and monitoring system in which investments in the logistics service sector will be made in a coordinated framework and more efficiently. On the basis of the applications submitted, the Council will propose the award of the title. Logistics parks can be certified as intermodal logistics parks, regional logistics parks, or local logistics parks.

According to the ministry’s statement, Hungary has excellent potential in the field of freight transport, as it is a unique entry point to the EU on three major road freight routes, and the motorway network is easily accessible from almost the whole country. The role of logistics is enhanced by the fact that

Hungary is a meeting point for high-tech industry and capital from the West and the East.

The logistics sector is one of the foundations of economic growth, with almost 2,500 companies operating in this sector, employing 300,000 people and providing a livelihood for around 100,000 families. The sector currently accounts for five percent of GDP, and the government’s aim is to increase this to 10 percent.

Hungary needs to further strengthen its investment and export-based economy and to exploit its growth potential and improve its competitiveness. One of the means to do so is to develop the infrastructure used by industrial companies, based on the availability of transport, haulage, warehousing, and related services.

These logistical improvements will cover an area of approximately 340 hectares and represent a value of around HUF 370 billion (EUR 950 million).

Another 39 logistics centers are qualified by law to bear the title of logistics park, bringing the total number of official logistics parks in Hungary to 57. The government expects the Council’s work to make a substantial contribution to the development of industrial, logistics, and technology parks, thereby enhancing the attractiveness and economic performance of Hungarian regions, the ministry said in the statement.
