The Citadel, a historic landmark atop Gellért Hill in Hungary’s capital, is undergoing a transformative renovation project set to commence in 2020. Fronted by the government and directed by Gergely Fodor, the renovation aims to restore the fortress to its former glory while enhancing accessibility and amenities for visitors, writes Demokrata.
Despite its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 1987, the Citadel had suffered from decades of neglect, culminating in its declaration as unfit for visitors in 2014. A variety of uses over the years, including as a meeting point for criminals and a nightclub, contributed to its deterioration.
Now, plans are in place to revitalize the fortress, with an emphasis on preserving its historical significance while modernizing its facilities.
Extensive archaeological research preceded the renovation project, unearthing fascinating relics such as Celtic, Roman, and Turkish coins, as well as remnants of an astronomical observatory dating back to 1815. The renovation efforts began with the partial demolition of a concrete bunker at the courtyard, followed by ongoing conservation work on the fortress walls. Despite challenges encountered during construction, including structural issues within the walls and variability in underlying rock geometry, the project remains on track to revitalize this iconic landmark.
The renovation project includes significant modifications to enhance the Citadel’s accessibility and create a welcoming environment for visitors.
New openings in the fortress walls will improve accessibility and connectivity, while extensive green spaces and a 6,000 square meter public park within the fortress grounds will enhance the overall experience. A highlight of the renovation will be a glass hall housing an exhibition on Hungarian freedom fights, showcasing pioneering architectural design. As the project nears completion, the revitalized Citadel on Gellért Hill is poised to reclaim its status as a prominent cultural and historical landmark in Hungary.
