The 50 billion euros in EU aid agreed upon yesterday are crucial to help Ukrainians maintain their state, not to purchase weapons, clarified Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán during a radio interview.
Prime Minister Orbán discussed various topics, including the ongoing conflict, farmers’ protests in Brussels, and the recent meeting between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba.
The prime minister emphasized the primary goal is to achieve peace, dismissing the notion that Brussels is supplying weapons or providing funds for weaponry. The 50 billion euros in aid is for preventing the bankruptcy of Ukraine, highlighting the potential collapse if financial support from the EU and the USA is not sustained.
Concerned about the prolonged war, he stressed the urgency to avoid disruptions in financial commitments to Hungary, as there was a risk of diverting funds to Ukraine and noted that
Western Europe misunderstands the situation, highlighting the need for a change in Brussels for lasting peace.
The prime minister addressed additional contentious issues, such as migration, gender concerns, and the EU’s economic policies. He underscored the importance of political change through the upcoming European Parliament elections in June.
Discussing farmers’ protests in Brussels, Mr. Orbán noted the challenges faced by both Hungarian and Spanish farmers due to decisions by Brussels increasing production costs.
He emphasized the need to restrict Ukrainian agricultural products from entering the EU market.
Regarding the meeting between Hungarian and Ukrainian foreign ministers, the prime minister acknowledged significant differences in their positions. Despite Hungary’s extensive humanitarian efforts for Ukrainians, he expressed concerns about the disenfranchisement of Hungarians in Transcarpathia since 2015.
Following the EU summit, he sees a greater chance for change, but emphasizes the importance of realizing promises and ongoing talks between Ukraine and Hungary to address issues.
