Former Hungarian Justice Minister and MEP for the government Fidesz party László Trócsányi had called for an evidence-based use of the concept of the rule of law in Brussels during a debate last week entitled ‘Rule of Flaw: The EU’s Legal Hypocrisy,’ organized by The European Conservative.

The European Union’s currently dominant left-wing elites have in recent years often criticized Hungary for alleged violations of the rule of law, as well as various transgressions against what they defined as “European Values”. During a debate in Brussels MEP for Fidesz, and current rector of the Gáspár Károli Reformed University, László Trócsányi reaffirmed that “the rule of law is connected with democracy, and Hungary and Poland are democratic countries.
But if you go to the European Parliament, they have a different vocabulary, the term ‘rule-of-law’ becomes an ideological expression, a political expression, easily used to condemn nations,”
the Hungarian politician said. He also alleged that the regular and harsh criticism that comes from the European Parliament against Hungary was presented without evidence, “because the European Parliament is not interested in the evidence”.
Trócsányi also spoke critically about the EU’s federalist attempts, their drive for “an ever closer Union” because this could blur the line between the fundamental rights and sovereignty of nation state ans European Union institution. This carries the danger of unelected European bureaucrats meddling in sovereign countries’ internal affairs, thus overriding the will of their citizens.
Mr. Trócsányi also pointed out that when it comes to the redistribution of migrants and asylum seekers in Europe as mandated by the European Union’s recently adopted Migration and Asylum Pact, the Hungarian government is adamant that it is only them and the citizens of Hungary who have the right to decide who will enter their country. This is clashing the directives of the Pact, that would force a certain quota of illegal migrants on every member state, or would mandate a penalty for the refusal to accept them.
“It is not that our laws are violating EU norms, but the EU regulations are going against our existing constitution with every new decision. Where is the limit of the ‘ever-closer union?’ With no limit, there can be no constitutional identity either,”
