Audi’s Győr Plant Breaks Ten-Year Production Record in 2023

Audi Hungaria reached a ten-year production record in 2023, with the manufacturing of nearly 178,000 vehicles and more than 1.66 million engines.

The Győr-based (western Hungary) company, together with its subsidiary Audi Hungaria Ahead, employed 12,143 people last year. As they said in a statement, 177,775 vehicles were produced in 2023, up from 171,134 in 2022. Of the engines produced, 114,058 were electric, up from 108,097 last year.

In a statement, the Chairman of the Board of the company, celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, Alfons Dintner, was quoted as saying that

2023 was a record year not only for vehicle production, but also for the production of exclusive series body components and electric drives.

Of the vehicles produced, 94,283 were Q3 models, 73,806 were Q3 Sportbacks, 6,850 were Audi TT Coupés, and 2,681 were TT Roadsters. Of the Q3 and Q3 Sportback models, 24,579 plug-in hybrids and 5,393 mild hybrids were produced.

It was pointed out that the company offers competence-based procurement, IT, and financial services in addition to engine and vehicle production, and that the staff also works on high-quality technical development.

The technical development area, which has been in operation since 2001, was expanded in 2023 to include new competencies, including the development of combustion and electric drive modules for the entire powertrain system.

Audi Hungaria employed 11,663 people as of December 31 2023, making them the largest employer in the region in 2023, but together with the subsidiary founded last year, they employ a total of 12,143 people, they reported.

The subsidiary provides services to the Volkswagen group that are not directly related to production, such as procurement, IT, and financial services, and has seen its customer base grow steadily over the past year.

In addition to the Audi models, the company will start series production of the Cupra Terramar in 2024, and preparations for the production of the new generation of electric engines, the MEB ECO, have also begun.

According to earlier information, the company had a turnover of EUR 8.436 billion in 2022, with a profit after tax of EUR 343 million. In 2021, it had a turnover of EUR 7.717 billion, and a profit after tax of EUR 332 million.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó also announced the record on his social media platform. He underlined: “Hungary’s name is now forever associated with the modern German automotive industry, which is the backbone of the entire European economy.”

“In addition to Audi’s fantastic performance, the ongoing expansion of Mercedes’ Kecskemét (central Hungary) plant and BMW’s construction in Debrecen (eastern Hungary) are also worth a look,” Szijjártó emphasized. “Thanks to all of this, Hungary has become a member of a very exclusive elite club:

there are only three countries in the world (China and Germany are the other two) where all three German premium car brands have their own factories,”

the Facebook post reads.

Szijjártó noted that although some Western European politicians are constantly spreading the ideology of separating the Chinese and European economies, life is fortunately quite different: after the big Eastern battery factories in China and Korea that serve German companies, the world’s largest electric car manufacturer, BYD, is bringing its first European car factory to Hungary.
