Chamber of Agriculture Stands with German Farmers during Protests

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.17.

In an open letter published on Tuesday, the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture (NAK) spoke up for the German farming sector.

The letter states that the German government is destroying one of the economic and existential pillars of their country- the sustainable, crisis-proof, and reliable food supply. A week-long farmers’ demonstration recently took place, during which the farming community expressed its discontent and paralyzed large parts of Germany.

The NAK agrees with the German farmers and encourages them to persevere.

The Hungarian farming community assures the German farmers of their full solidarity and support,

writes NAK.

The letter calls on European decision-makers to take the current protests as an opportunity to finally recognize the danger of their unreasonable green measures and the climate protection pressure on farmers also threatening the entire EU farming sector, especially as some German politicians are already calling for uniform regulations for agricultural diesel fuel across Europe.

The NAK points out that the EU heads of state and government “have already plunged Hungarian and Central European agriculture into a crisis” by allowing unrestricted imports of Ukrainian agricultural products. The only way to protect Hungarian farmers who have suffered billions in losses from the market destruction caused by Ukrainian grain, is an import ban – a measure that the state itself has introduced, but which is also necessary at the EU level.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the chairman of the farmers’ association MAGOSZ described it as unacceptable that the EU wants to shift the burden of the war in Ukraine onto farmers.

MAGOSZ therefore expects the Brussels-based umbrella organization of European farmers’ and cooperative associations, Copa-Cogeca, to stop remaining silent and stand up for the protesting German farmers.

This situation shows how destructive a government can be if it wants to pursue agricultural policy without a strategy,

stated Jakab István, President of MAGOSZ.
