Average Hotel Booking Prices Increased by 17% in 2023

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.17.

According to Szallas.hu statistics, the average per capita booking price per night in 2023 was HUF 13,000 (EUR 34), marking a 17% increase compared to 2022.

Among the regions, Lake Balaton and among the municipalities, Budapest, Siófok (southern shore of Balaton), and Eger (northern Hungary), emerged as the most popular destinations. In 2023, Balaton represented one-fifth of all reservations, with 18 percent of bookings made in Northern Hungary, as highlighted by Lili Kelemen, Szallas.hu‘s press spokesperson.

Budapest, Siófok, Balatonfüred (Balaton-region), and Eger led the list of domestic destinations last year, followed by Pécs, Szeged, Debrecen, and Gyula (southern and eastern Hungary). Hajdúszoboszló and Hévíz (western and eastern Hungary) led the list of thermal spas.

Overall, apartments and guesthouses claimed a larger share of bookings last year compared to 2022, indicating a sustained growth in the popularity of alternative accommodations. Exceptions to this trend were noted during the autumn-winter period and holiday weekends when the demand for hotels remained higher.

Preliminary data for 2023 suggests that the number of bookings remained below the 2022 level, while the booking value stagnated compared to the previous year.

Orsolya Gonda, head of sales at Szallas.hu, noted that the revenue of their hotel partners either stagnated or saw minimal increases due to the surge in the average price in 2023.

Regarding inbound tourism, last year witnessed a notable influx, with guests from Romania visiting Gyula on weekends, and in the Transdanubian (Dunántúl) region, Austrians, Czechs, Slovaks, and German pensioners being the predominant visitors, typically on weekdays.
