There are twice as many vehicles with green number plates in Hungary as at the beginning of 2022, the Ministry of Energy wrote on its Facebook page.
Last year, 22,651 vehicles were were put on the road with green number plates in Hungary, making 2023 another record year, surpassing the peak of almost 21,000 vehicles registered in 2022. Last year, more than 60 percent of the vehicles with green number plates were pure electric.
At the end of December last year, there were already more than 86,000 climate-friendly vehicles on the roads of Hungary.

Regionally, the number of vehicles with green number plates exceeded 34,000 in the capital and 52,000 in rural areas.
By the end of 2023, the proportion of vehicles with green number plates registered outside of Budapest will exceed 60 percent for the first time,”
the ministry added.
They stressed that the future of the Hungarian economy lies in green energy, and the government sees green transport as playing a key role in reducing environmental pollution and meeting climate commitments. Electric vehicles can be used without causing air pollution, are quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles, and can save operating and maintenance costs.
Businesses can apply for a non-refundable state contribution to buy a pure electric car, van, or minibus through a call for applications starting in early February. Companies can win a grant of HUF 2.8-4 million (EUR 7,400-10,000) from the HUF 30 billion (EUR 79 million) budget for the purchase of a vehicle, depending on the battery capacity.
