Balázs Izsák, president of the Szekler National Council (SZNT), has won the case against the Romanian gendarmerie for the fine imposed for organizing the Szekler Freedom Day last year, Balázs Izsák announced on his social media page on Monday.
As he wrote, the Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely) court, in a judgment handed down on December 28, 2023, annulled the record of the fine imposed by the Romanian gendarmerie unit in Târgu Mureș.
Last March, the Romanian gendarmerie fined Balázs Izsák for organizing the Szekler Freedom Day parade in Târgu Mures on March 10, 2023. The fine of RON 1000 (EUR 200) was imposed for “holding a prohibited public event,” six days after the parade. In the record of the fine, the gendarmerie claimed that “Romanian law prohibits the dissemination of ideas of regionalization and territorial autonomy,” and even described the demand for territorial autonomy based on ethnic criteria as chauvinism.
In its judgment of December 28, 2023, the Târgu Mureş court of first instance annulled the record on the fine and ordered the gendarmerie to pay the legal costs of RON 300 (EUR 60), according to the judgment published by the president of the SZNT. The court’s decision is not final and can be appealed within 30 days.
