Fenékpuszta Manor House Renewal Marks a Milestone in Heritage Conservation

The Festetics’ manor house in Fenékpuszta near Keszthely, a historic site with a rich legacy, has been renovated through the National Castle and Forts Program. Despite decades of neglect, the once-renowned stud farm and noble family residence now stand revitalized, offering a glimpse into the area’s agricultural and cultural heritage.

The National Castle and Forts Program, though officially closed, continues its mission of preserving Hungary’s rich historical landmarks. Recent developments near Keszthely have seen the completion of renovations at the Festetics’ manor house in Fenékpuszta, a project costing HUF 3 billion (EUR 7.8 million). The restoration breathes new life into a site that was once a hub of European horse breeding and noble influence.

Decades of neglect had left the Fenékpuszta manor house in disrepair, despite its historical significance. Once the residence of the influential Festetics family,

the complex had housed a prestigious stud farm with a profound impact on both international and Hungarian agriculture.

As part of the renovation project, the small manor house has been meticulously restored to showcase the daily life of the Festetics family and their farm. The farmer’s stables have been transformed into a versatile community space, while the gully stables now offer insight into equestrian life and horse racing.

Visitors can explore the calf stables, gaining knowledge about horse breeding and the area’s agricultural heritage.

Hungary’s tradition of horse breeding, dating back nearly 500 years, was brought to life in the Fenékpuszta manor house. The restored complex not only highlights the historical significance of horse racing in elite circles but also pays tribute to individuals like Tasziló Festetics, a renowned horse breeder who played a role in European equestrian history.

Bálint Nagy, member of parliament, emphasized the region’s responsibility as guardians of this rich heritage. The Festetics family’s enduring impact on the area’s intellectual and cultural legacy underscores the importance of preserving and presenting such historical treasures.

János Lázár, the Minister of Construction and Transport, reiterated the government’s commitment to heritage protection. Acknowledging the irreparable loss of pre-1945 heritage, he emphasized the significance of presenting these historical sites for posterity. Despite the inability to fully reconstruct the former stud farm, the revitalized Fenékpuszta manor house stands as a testament to Hungary’s thousand-year history in the Carpathian Medieval region, contributing to Europe’s diverse cultural tapestry.
