The reconstruction of Budapest Nyugati Station (Western Railway Station) has reached another spectacular point. Thanks to the works carried out this year, the facade facing Teréz Boulevard, the towers, and the main staircase have been completely renewed, and the station will once again welcome passengers in its original splendor during the festive season, reports Magyar Nemzet.
The renovation of the passenger hall and the facade of Nyugati Station has been carried out in several phases, with many details having been restored to their original appearance in recent years.
The renovation of the Teréz Boulevard facade has now been fully completed.
The part of the building that has been hidden behind scaffolding for years has been restored from the roof to the pavement level, including the towers. The renovation has involved the work of many building specialists and more than fifty restorers. The towers on the main facade were originally more ornate and decorated with unique tilework than other parts of the building that have been restored, and the current renovation has been adapted to reflect this.
The renovation of the facade, plinth, windows, and main staircase of the Nyugati Station on Teréz Boulevard has also been finished, completing the look of one of Budapest’s most beautiful public buildings for the holidays.
At the station, the refurbishment of the gateway and the replacement of the platform lift are still ongoing. These will include the renewal of the ceiling, lighting, and cladding in the cross walkway connecting the Westend Shopping Center with the waiting area.
The works will be completed in 2024.
The construction of the cross walkway and the lift is being carried out by MÁV, with domestic budget resources and European Union funding under the Széchenyi 2020 program.
