A drone video has been released showing the final steps of the complex renovation of Szeged Cathedral (in southern Hungary), capturing the restoration of one of the tallest towers in the city center, reports turizmus.com.
The video shows the restoration of the cross, the tower’s crowning glory, at one of the highest points in Szeged. With the completion of the multi-year renovation process, Szeged will celebrate Christmas this year with a completely renewed Votive Church. The cathedral, located in the city center, is a dominant landmark of Szeged’s skyline. Also known as the Votive Church of Szeged, the iconic building is the second tallest structure in the city after the TV Tower.
The cathedral and its surroundings have been renovated and landscaped over a period of several years, but the bell towers were restored only this year.
This year’s works included cleaning and repairing the stone and brick surfaces and other decorative elements of the tall structure, and renewing the windows and the clocks’ hands and glass mosaics.
In the newly released drone video published by PERI Hungary, the company that designed the scaffolding for safe working on the towers, you can see industrial alpinists working at a dizzying height on the top of the tower, where the cross was also inspected and repaired. To renovate the towers, the engineers measured the geometry of the building to millimeter precision using 3D laser scanning technology, and designed the scaffolding using the resulting 3D point cloud.

The cathedral, also a symbol of Szeged, is important not only from a religious, but also from a cultural and tourist point of view. The tower is open to visitors and offers an impressive view of Szeged. The view can be enjoyed from even higher up in the video, from where you can see the Belvárosi Bridge, and the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas next to the Votive Church. The video gives a bird’s-eye view of the Lower Town and Szeged Railway Station, where visitors getting off the train and heading to the Szeged Christmas Market will now see the restored towers.
