The Hungarian-Turkish cultural season kicked off with a gala performance on Monday. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Hungary Katalin Novák, and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán attended the opening ceremony at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.
Government Commissioner Péter Hoppál stressed in his opening speech that “our friendship has its roots in the times before our conquest of Hungary.
A wide range of linguistic, archaeological, musical, and ethnographic evidence confirms the friendly relations between Hungarian and Turkish culture.”
He added that Hungarian heroes of freedom, including Francis II Rákóczi and Lajos Kossuth, had emigrated to Türkiye. The politician recalled that 100 years ago, a new chapter in the history of cooperation between Hungarians and Turks was opened.
The year-long celebrations in Hungary will showcase a wide range of Turkish culture, and a Hungarian cultural season in Türkiye will be held at the same time.
Soloists from both countries, the orchestra and dance troupe of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, the Orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera, and the Ankara State Modern Dance Company of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism performed during the opening night.
The gala was broadcast live on Hungarian and Turkish public media.
