Our Students On the Podium At the International Science Olympiad

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.12.11.

The six-member Hungarian team won one gold and five silver medals at the 20th International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 1 to 10 December.

Established in 2004 by Indonesia, the IJSO has seen Hungary’s consistent participation since its beginnings. Competitors engage in demonstrating their theoretical and practical knowledge in the domains of biology, chemistry, and physics. The event welcomes teams of six from each country.

This year, 304 students from 54 nations participated

in the scientific competition, as reported by the Hungarian organizers.

Artúr Biró, a 10th-grade student from Apáczai Csere János High School, stood out by clinching the gold medal. Meanwhile, Luca Nagy and Ábel Balázs Bauer from Révai Miklós High School in Győr earned silver medals. István Tamás Bense and László Zoltán Szepesi, representing Eötvös József High School in Budapest, secured silver medals in the 8th and 9th-grade categories, respectively. János Dániel Simon also claimed a silver in the 10th-grade class.

Remarkably, the Hungarian team achieved a joint 7th place with Australia in the team competition,

marking a historic outcome for IJSO.

Preparations for the competition were spearheaded by educators from Apáczai Csere János High School, selecting finalists from physics and chemistry competitions. The Hungarian team received support from various sources, including the National Talent Program.
