In 2024, the Hungarian Defense Forces will play a key role in the Western Balkans, as the lead nation of the European Union’s largest military mission. In addition to the company-level MH EUFOR Contingent, Hungarian troops will provide primary medical care for the international mission, air search, rescue and evacuation capability, a helicopter sub-unit, a bomb disposal team with canine patrol, and logistical support and supply.
Before deployment, Major General László Sticz, the first Hungarian commander of the European Union’s largest mission, observed one of the elements of the High Voltage 2023 exercise, which concluded the training of the unit, on December 6. As part of the closing exercise, outgoing personnel performed a spectacular crowd dispersal exercise.
Multi-level preparations have been underway since March.
This is an extremely difficult act of preparation, which we have put together and implemented along complex thematic frameworks. We have come to the end of it both at the individual and unit levels,”
the Major General said.
Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans is vital for Hungary. Since the end of the Bosnian war, Hungary has played an active role in crisis management of the region. Between 1995 and 2004, the Hungarian Defense Forces participated in NATO peacekeeping missions, and since then have also been involved in the duties of EUFOR ALTHEA.
