With a great performance, controlling the finals practically all the way, the Hungarian team led by Zsombor Berecz won the Star Sailors League Gold Cup, considered to be the World Sailing Team Championship.
The final positions were decided in Sunday’s ultimate race, where the Hungarian boat led almost all the way and finished ahead of the Italians, Dutch and Spanish. This was one of the biggest successes in Hungarian sailing.
What is the secret? If you believe you can win, you will win. It is as simple as that”,
said Zsombor Berecz during the race broadcast. He added: “Individually we are not the best sailors, but as a team we are.” Zsombor Berecz, who will also act as national captain from the summer, told his opponents to come to Lake Balaton to train.
The Finndingi world and European champion told MTI that they really wanted to win and knew they could.
I told the guys it was written in the stars that we were going to win, we just had to finish the job. I believe in the law of numbers, and in the final races we won the first race, came second in the second, first again in the third, second in the fourth, so first place had to be next”,
said Zsombor Berecz.
He stressed that the team members took part in the race at their own expense. “Maybe that was one of our strengths, because those who really wanted to be here, gave their all, put aside family, work, everyone gave their free time to be here,” he said. Zsombor Berecz said that although this was a completely different type of competition to the Olympics, the success was almost equivalent to a five-ring medal.
Already in the top eight, Hungary was the only team from a non-maritime country. From Saturday’s semi-final, the Hungarian team was second behind Spain, ahead of New Zealand and France, and advanced to the final.
