Christmas Fair to Open at Buda Castle with a Variety of Festive Events

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.11.30.

Between December 1-24, the Association of Hungarian Folk Artists and the Sándor Márai Cultural Public Foundation will organize a Christmas Fair at the Buda Castle, on the Szentháromság Square, where a wide range of programs will await visitors.

As part of the “Advent in Buda” programs, in addition to products of renowned craftsmen, visitors will be welcomed with stage programs, craft activities, a folk art nativity scene, Hungarian folk gastronomy, candle lighting, and of course a festive atmosphere.

The three-week festive event will be attended by the most outstanding masters of the Association of Hungarian Folk Artists. The craftsmen of the decades-old blue-dyeing dynasty will be joined by ceramists, enamel and gingerbread makers. Moreover, jewelers and textile makers from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan will also be present.

M-ART (Regional Association of Hungarian Creative Artists of Central and Western Transdanubia) will offer a free gift-making workshop in the afternoons where children can make Christmas gifts for their loved ones. There will be a variety of activities for families every day, including the making of advent calendars, beeswax candles, door and window decorations, greetings cards and Christmas tree ornaments, as well as gingerbread baking and decorating.

A special feature of the event is that visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the craft traditions of the district’s twin towns of Lendava, Slovakia (Lendva), Komárno, Slovakia (Révkomárom), Odorheiu Secuiesc, Romania (Székelyudvarhely) and Senta, Serbia (Zenta).

On the weekends, there will be stage performances to get the public in the mood for the festivities. The event will also be worth visiting for the folk gastronomy, as in addition to mulled wine and hot tea, several Hungarian dishes will be served at the “Advent in Buda” program, where gastronomy lovers will be offered chimney cakes, the so-called ‘pozsonyi kifli,’ and Tokaj wines, among other things. On Saturdays from December 2, an Advent candle-lighting ceremony will take place on the Szentháromság Square, with the participation of a denomination from the 1st district every week.
