Illegal migration and economic issues were among the topics discussed between Hungarian President Katalin Novák and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt on Monday in Cairo.
Among the topics discussed was the issue of illegal migration, as Egypt is a key player in the region, Tamás Schanda, chief of staff of the Hungarian President stressed, underlining that we are counting on Egypt, not only Hungary, but the entire European Union, to stop illegal migration.
Regarding the economic cooperation between the two countries,
Hungarian companies are present in the country, and Egypt has purchased railway carriages on an unprecedented scale.
Hungary hopes that this can continue in the future and can export more Hungarian transport vehicles to Egypt.
Both presidents attach great importance to the protection of traditional values, including families. The presidents also touched on the Stipendium Hungaricum Program in the field of higher education.
The meeting lasted an hour and a half, and also touched upon the issues concerning the war-zones in the neighborhood of the two countries.
According to local reports, Katalin Novák appreciated Egypt’s role in maintaining stability and peace in the Middle East. The two sides agreed on the need to condemn attacks against civilians and forced displacement, and to prevent further escalation of the conflict. On the Russo-Ukrainian war, the two presidents also agreed on the need for strong international action to resolve the crisis.
The regional situation, in particular the events in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, also received much attention during the meeting. President El-Sisi stressed the vital importance of achieving a lasting ceasefire and of humanitarian assistance. He noted that this must be done while ensuring that the conflict does not spill over into the West Bank. He reiterated that the stability and security of the region is closely linked to the international recognition of a Palestinian state along the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Katalin Novák also held talks with Hanafy Gebaly, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Today, she will be received by Coptic Pope Tawadros II, and will address the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Friday.
