Albanian Mafia May Be Supplying Weapons to Migrants on Southern Hungarian Borders

The weapons confiscated from migrants on the Serbian-Hungarian border came from the Albanian mafia in Kosovo, Serbian Interior Minister Bratislav Gašić said in Belgrade. He added that the organized criminal gangs that help smuggle migrants in northern Serbia are receiving help from the Albanian mafia, reports Magyar Nemzet.

“They are not migrants, they are organized criminal gangs, and we are fighting them.” Minister Gašić remarked that the Albanian mafia in Kosovo supports these organized groups with weapons and in all other ways.

At the end of October, hundreds of Serb police officers were deployed to the Serbian-Hungarian border and nearby settlements following an armed clash between migrants that resulted in fatalities.

In two weeks, police officers detained 4,931 migrants in the areas of Subotica (Szabadka), Sombor (Zombor), Kikinda (Nagykikinda), and Pirot in southeast Serbia.

Moreover, they recovered nine machine guns, five pistols, 1,600 rounds of ammunition, hundreds of passports and large quantities of drugs. During the operation, eight people were arrested for human trafficking and 190 others were detained for various offenses.

At the height of the migration crisis in 2015, about a million illegal migrants crossed the so-called Western Balkan route, of which Serbia is a part. Based on official figures,

the most popular route for illegal immigration is still the land-route through the Western Balkans.

Since the Serbian authorities do not deport those they apprehend, but simply transport them back from the northern border to the southern border, many migrants are on the move again, and a few days later they reach the Hungarian border, where they try to re-enter the European Union.

Recently, Hungary Today wrote that according to the Hungarian national security report, there is a link between illegal migration and terrorism. The document shows that violence in the border region is on the rise and that terrorist networks could take control of the routes of illegal migration, thus increasing the risk of further escalation. It was pointed out that in terms of internal security, the growing threat of terrorism, as a consequence of the conflict between Israel and Hamas, poses an increased risk in parallel to the increased migratory pressure. The report warns that routes of illegal migration, including the Western Balkans through Hungary, could be used by terrorist networks.

Approximately 1,000-1,200 illegal border crossings are detected on the Serbian-Hungarian border daily. In August, 293 illegal crossers were detected at one point of the border crossing in one hour. The National Police Headquarters stressed that the number of illegal migrants apprehended and escorted back broke a record in week 40 with 5,606.
