Hungarian Soldiers May Serve Longer in Iraq against Islamic State

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.11.16.

On behalf of the government, the Minister of Defense has submitted to parliament an amendment proposal on the military engagement in Iraq.

Based on the proposal submitted by Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, up to twenty soldiers (forty in the transition period), would serve in international operations against the Islamic State. The assignment of the soldiers will last until December 31, 2025.

Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said that Hungary will continue to contribute to NATO’s collective defense tasks and joint action against terrorism as a valued member of the alliance.

The minister added that the Hungarian government’s position remains clear: the migration affecting Europe must be curbed and the problem must be dealt with locally. Migration and terrorism go hand in hand, and Islamic State fighters are arriving in European cities and at Hungary’s southern border.

Therefore, it is of paramount importance to curb migration and terrorism and to extend the Hungarian Defense Forces’ role in Iraq until December 31, 2025,

he said.

Under the previous arrangements, the service of Hungarian soldiers in Iraq would have lasted until December 31, 2023.

Based on the newly submitted proposal, the Hungarian Defense Forces will also participate in coalition operations against the terrorist organization in partnership-building, military assistance, and advisory and troop escort tasks.

The soldiers of the Hungarian Defense Forces have been serving in the Kurdish region of Iraq since August 25, 2015 in the framework of the international operation against the Islamic State terrorist organization. The Hungarian Parliament is expected to decide on the proposal this year.
