The cooperation between Hungary and Audi is an unparalleled success story, as the German automotive company has played an important role in ensuring that Hungary’s economy has been able to emerge from the crises of recent years stronger than ever before, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Budapest on Tuesday.
The minister awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit to the Chairman of the Board of Audi Hungaria Zrt. in recognition of his work in developing the company’s activities in Győr (western Hungary), and also praised Alfons Dintner for his role in deepening the relationship between the economy and higher education, and strengthening Hungarian-German economic relations.
He stressed that
the car manufacturer had been an indispensable player in the success of the Hungarian economy.

Alfons Dintner started his professional career at AUDI AG in Ingolstadt, Germany in 1987. He was previously Head of the Audi plant in Brussels, then Chairman of the Board of Volkswagen de México and later Managing Director of Audi Mexico. He has been Chairman of the Board of Management at Audi Hungaria since October 1, 2019.
Under Alfons Dintner’s leadership, Audi Hungaria has further strengthened its vision and sustainability ambitions:
the production of the new generation of electric engines has been launched, marking another milestone on the company’s path towards electromobility.
The minister also pointed out that
the company, which started producing electric motors in Győr, has also made a major contribution to Hungary’s role as one of the winners of the modern automotive revolution.
Péter Szijjártó said that Audi’s activities were also important because today Hungary’s export performance is 34th in the world ranking, and despite all the difficulties, investment records have been broken.
He emphasized that the car manufacturer’s role in sustainable growth is also significant, as Hungary is now one of the twenty countries in the world that are able to increase their economic performance while reducing their emissions.
Audi’s investment in creating Europe’s largest on-site solar park in Győr was essential to retaining this title,”
he pointed out. The politician also noted that the company was playing an important role in changing the dimension of the Hungarian economy. The government is focusing first on creating a manufacturing-based industrial and economic environment, on which higher value-added service and research functions can be built. In this context, he said that Audi has also started to strengthen its service and research and development functions following the expansion of production.
The minister recalled that despite all the crises and obstacles, 2022 was Hungary’s most successful year economically, and that this required some companies to deliver their best ever performance. As an example, he cited Audi, producing a record number of cars in Győr and thus playing a major role in the economic results.
He stressed that the automotive industry is the backbone of the Hungarian economy, and
the sector’s production value reached the HUF 10,000 billion (EUR 26.6 billion) mark last year.
Finally, Szijjártó underlined that without the Audi plant, Győr would not be “the most beautiful and modern city of hope in Hungary today.”
