We are approaching the most magical time of the year, with Budapest’s biggest and most beautiful Christmas markets opening soon. Here are the exact opening times.
December is a truly special time in Budapest. Christmas lights dress the Hungarian capital in festive attire, hot tea and mulled wine warm our hands and souls, while strolling through the city’s magnificent buildings.
The online vote for Europe’s Best Christmas Market in 2022 was a huge Hungarian success, with the Advent Basilica winning the title for the third time last year. In the European Best Destination travel portal’s competition, Budapest’s Advent Basilica came out on top ahead of festivities held in 21 European cities including Madrid, Vienna, Brussels, Salzburg, and Prague, with the most votes ever. This year, the Advent Basilica at St. Stephen’s Square will take place between November 17 and January 1.

This Christmas market in the heart of Budapest attracts millions of visitors from Hungary and abroad every year. This year, the monumental Christmas tree will offer visitors a truly classic Christmas atmosphere. Váci Street is always decorated for Christmas with its magnificent lights and architectural features, but when the artisans and food stands arrive, you cannot get enough. The hustle and bustle, the Christmas atmosphere, the fantastic variety of flavors, scents, and lights captivate everyone.
One of the main attractions of the market is the children’s train, free of charge. The children’s laughter and the train’s inimitable sound are all part of a classic Christmas atmosphere. Furthermore, there will also be a craft play area for children, where fun is guaranteed.
Since last year, the Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square has been called Vörösmarty Classic Xmas. Here, too, the festivities begin on November 17 and last until December 31.
In addition to the Christmas markets in the city center, the Advent events in Óbuda are also very popular, thanks to the cobbled streets and the small-town atmosphere of Óbuda. If you want to get into the Christmas spirit, you are welcome to visit the main square from December 1 to 23.
