Forty years ago, in November 1983, Woody Allen’s romantic comedy Play it Again, Sam was premiered at the Vígszínház (Comedy Theater of Budapest), and has been performed ever since, with András Kern starring in the title role.
The American star thanked Kern for bringing his characters to life on screen and on stage, writes Világgazdaság. In the video, he wished András Kern to continue this exceptional work for decades to come.
“András! I want to congratulate you and thank you for doing 40 years of my character play and my voice. I really appreciate it.
You made me into a big hero and I never even have to leave my living room at home. So please continue and I wish you 20, 40, or 60 more years of great success! Thank you again and congratulations,”
it can be heard in the message.

András Kern told Inforádió earlier that he could not remember who came up with the idea to stage Play it Again, Sam, but he thought it might have been director Péter Valló or someone from the theater. What he does remember, however, is that
when he first read the play, he did not like it, but his wife predicted it would be on the program for forty years.
Asked if, after 40 years and more than 500 performances, he was still not bored with the role of Allan Felix, he said that there are many inexplicable things in acting, but he knew the answer to that: if it is bad, you start to get bored with it by the third performance, it does not take a year. However, what is good, you do not get bored of for decades. He thinks this difference is more interesting than how long a performance has been running.
“The anniversary performance was attended by former cast members of the play, as over the four decades of cast changes and stand-ins, many actors have visited the Manhattan home of divorced film critic Allan Felix.
There was only one role for which there were never any other candidates: of course, András Kern always played Allan, that is, for 523 nights,”
