The BYD plant may not be built in Soroksár (23rd District of Budapest), but in southern Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said at the plenary session in response to questions on Monday. He also added that it is still uncertain if Hungary will win the competition because the country has to compete with Western European countries, such as France, for the Chinese electric car plant, reports Világgazdaság.
As Hungary Today recently reported, the Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD may build its first European car plant in Hungary, based on German press reports. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, citing unnamed sources close to the Asian automotive giant, reported that the decision has already been made internally.
On Monday, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told atv.hu that all this was just a rumor, and he did not even comment on it. The same day, during the plenary session, Bence Tordai, opposition politician, asked Viktor Orbán if the Chinese company was really planning to build its plant in Soroksár. In his reply, the Prime Minister stated that “this large investment,” referring to BYD,
“will not be built in Soroksár, but in southern Hungary, if the competition is won.”
He also admitted that Hungary was “competing with the West.” “We do not know if we will win, we are in competition with Western European countries, for example the French,” Orbán said about the BYD investment, adding that
the decision would be made in December.
He does not know whether the Hungarian state is planning to invest in Soroksár. “If we can, we would like to move the investments to the south,” he noted.
