MTI-Hungary Today 2023.11.06.

Wizz Air has been awarded Global Environmental Sustainability Airline of the Year for the second consecutive time at the Center for Aviation (CAPA) Asia Aviation Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

“Wizz Air has been recognized for its unwavering commitment to sustainability,” announced the airline. CAPA rewards airlines and airports that put climate change at the heart of their business policies and strive for carbon neutrality.

The ultra low-cost airline operates one of the youngest fleets of aircraft in the world. In the 2023 financial year, Wizz Air has reduced its carbon emissions to 53.8 grams per passenger-kilometer, a reduction of 11 percent compared to its performance in the previous financial year

To achieve this, the company has invested heavily in its fleet, replacing older aircraft with the latest technology Airbus A321neo, offering significant environmental benefits.

Noise and nitrogen oxide emissions are almost 50 percent lower, and carbon dioxide emissions are 20 percent lower than the previous type.

In addition, Wizz Air has already developed a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) strategy.

In 2023, for the first time in its history, the airline has invested £5 million in a UK biofuel company, Firefly. It has also participated in a $50 million grant to CleanJoule, a US biofuels start-up, to encourage SAF research and development.

Wizz Air CEO József Váradi said that they were honored to receive the CAPA Global Sustainability Award for the second year in a row.

This win confirms our commitment to reduce carbon intensity by a further 25 percent by 2030,”

he added.

Wizz Air currently operates a fleet of 189 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft. In the financial year ended March 31, 2023, the airline carried 51.1 million passengers.

As the publicly available company data shows, Wizz Air Hungary Ltd. had net sales of €3.99 billion in its fiscal year from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, compared to €1.78 billion a year earlier. The company closed the last financial year with a loss of €400.19 million, and in the 2021-2022 period it had a loss of €18.32 million.
