Three Hungarian helicopter crews serving in a peace support mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina from next January recently held a training exercise, reports the Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County news portal szoljon.hu.
Major General Dr. László Sticz will lead the European Union’s operation, called EUFOR ALTHEA, in Bosnia and Herzegovina for one year from January 2024. Traditionally, the nation that commands EUFOR will also be responsible for the mission’s MEDEVAC, i.e. air medical evacuation capability, which was recently demonstrated to Major General Dr. László Sticz, the future first Hungarian commander of the mission, in Szolnok (eastern Hungary).
The search-and-rescue, air rescue, and air evacuation capabilities offered to EUFOR ALTHEA required long and highly concentrated training for both helicopter crews and medical soldiers.
Following the demonstration, Major General Dr. László Sticz expressed his appreciation for what he had seen and wished the participating medical personnel and pilots a successful mission.
Colonel Dr. Tamás Bali, Commander of the 86th Helicopter Brigade of the Szolnok Airbase, said that
during the one-year mission, three helicopters (two H145M and one Mi-17) and their crews will be serving in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Regarding the military training, he stressed that the current training was not aimed at a traditional NATO-standard MEDEVAC capability, but at an advanced level.
