The Country’s Largest Artificial Lake Has Become a Natural Wonder

Hungary Today 2023.10.31.

Lake Tisza (eastern Hungary) was initially used for water management purposes, but thanks to continuous development, it has become a tourist destination visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year, writes Magyar Nemzet.

A fantastic ornithological and natural paradise has been created here, which is why Lake Tisza is also known as a man-made paradise, State Secretary for Active Hungary, Máriusz Révész said. He reminded that tourists have gradually discovered the lake, that turned 50 in May this year, and thanks to this, there has been an explosive development in recent years.

Máriusz Révész considers the most important development to be the cycle path, providing a sixty-five kilometer route around the lake and is used by nearly 150,000 cyclists every year.

The State Secretary called it a unique and important development that

the lookout points, only accessible by water, are so popular that the kayaks and canoes that are piled up in the water sometimes make it impossible to moor at them.

If tourism in Lake Tisza works well, it is a source of livelihood for many local families, as locals provide a range of services to tourists, Máriusz Révész stressed in a video posted on the government’s website.

Fact

Lake Tisza, also known as Kisköre Reservoir, is the largest artificial lake in Hungary. As part of the ongoing Tisza River flood control project, the Tisza Dam was built in 1973. Its filling was finished in the 1990s, resulting in a 127 square kilometer lake. Following the reservoir’s completion, Hungarians began to flock to the site for holidays, since it compared favorably with the crowded and expensive Lake Balaton, the traditional holiday site. As a result, tourist infrastructure has been developed on the reservoir and the government has designated it an official tourism destination. The lake has a perfect ecology with a diversity of birds, plants, and animals. Lake Tisza, part of the Hortobágy National Park, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The Lake Tisza Ecocenter in Poroszló (on the right shore of the lake) was erected to collect and display the nature and wildlife of the Tisza River valley and Lake Tisza. It was opened to the public in 2012.
